La Alhambra

To visit the Alhambra it is better to get tickets in advance so you can choose the entrance time to the Nasrid Palaces. To visit the Alhambra there are several options: there is the possibility of purchasing the tickets the same day (the queues at the box office are endless), through the Granada Tourist Office website, through the new ‘La dobla de Oro’ option or using the Granada card. You can easily reach it in minibus 32 from Calle Pavaneras, next to the statue of Isabel la Católica or by private vehicles since next to the Alhambra there is public parking while walking down la Cuesta de los Chinosis a beautiful experience.

El Bañuelo

Old Arab bath from the 11th century which was restored two years ago. It only opens in the morning, it is very small yet interesting. Behind this site is the El Bañuelo tearoom, we recommend an Arab tea with pastries. Its patio overlooks the roof of the Bañuelo. The Bañuelo lies under a private house and its entrance is free.

El Albaicin

The best thing is to get lost and wander around. Points of interest are the Mirador de San Nicolás, the Mirador de La Lona and the Mirador de San Cristóbal and Plaza Aliatar. You must visit the area known as Calderería; it is full of shops with Moroccan merchandise and tearooms. If you wander around and get a little lost, just remember that walking downhill you will always reach the promenade along the river. There are many people who do not wander around for fear of getting lost and follow the road (for cars) which is the worst route to take. My advice is to get lost.

El Sacromonte

Next to the Albaicín is the Sacromonte neighbourhood, in front of the Alhambra. It was populated mainly by gypsies who lived in humble houses or cave houses, some of which can be visited today. Due to its tourist character it is a relatively quiet and picturesque neighbourhood just like the Albaicín. The Abbey of Sacromonte is also interesting. It is best to walk the main street, the Vereda de Enmedio, to the end. There the ascent to the Sacromonte Abbey begins which in my opinion is less visited but a very interesting place. It has catacombs. These are the visiting hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 11am to 1pm and 4pm to 6pm. Bank Holidays: Closed. The tours are guided. I think the entry is around 3 euros. You will also see announcements for the Sacromonte interpretation centre. In summer it is very nice because there are cinema and flamenco performances outdoors, but not now.

The Cathedral

Well, it depends on whether you like religious-themed culture and visits to this type of monuments. You can visit the chapel where the remains of the Catholic Monarchs have been buried. It is a Renaissance style chapel with Baroque elements, built between the 16th and 17th centuries and located in the heart of the city. It is recommendable walking around the building to admire its exterior before entering to see its interior.

El Corral del Carbón

This 14th century building was used in the Muslim era as an inn for merchants, a warehouse and a market. It became an open-air theatre and later a residential building. Currently and after a thorough restoration, the patio is used as a stage for plays, flamenco concerts and conferences and the rest is the headquarters of the Provincial Delegation of Culture of the Junta de Andalucia.

Markets

In the centre, next to the cathedral, there is a spice market and an Arab souk, similar to that of the Albaicín but slightly larger, called Alcaicería. Nearby you can visit the Corral del Carbón, a former metal market, now converted into ground floor offices and administrative headquarters. The facade and the courtyard are beautiful.

Tapas

In Granada tapas are free. Each drink is served with a tapa. Best local tapas area: the Calle Navas, next to the town hall. You have to go to El Diamantes, famous for its fried fish (it’s a tavern with a seedy appearance but legendary and highly recommended). A place called the Mentidero is also good. Another tapas area is the Campo del Príncipe with terraces outside. This recommendation depends on the weather because without terraces, the place is super boring. In the Albaicín you can also enjoy great tapas in the places I have mentioned before.
